week 6 article

oops - forgot this part

This article about RFID use in libraries is kind of fascinating - especially since I was recently involved in the large scale transfer of university IDs (and our library system) from a barcoded to a chip ID. We had a lot of discussions about privacy, about the problems, etc. so I found this reading to be interesting - seeing the issue from a scholarly point of view rather than a real world implementation.

Hi,
Thanks for your comment on my blog. I enjoyed reading your take on RFID chips because it made me rethink my opinion. I'm really interested in the real world implementation: did you encounter any issues with privacy? How did the library deal with non-book items where an RFID chip might not easily by attached? I know we tattle tape newspapers and other inexpensive items with the current system, but would RFID chips be more expensive than the newspapers themselves? Lots of questions. Thanks!
